□ 전시설명
서울을 비롯한 대도시의 아파트 건설이 대대적으로 시작된 지 30년 이상이 되었고, 무언가를 짓고 부수고 새로 짓는 모습은 이미 일상적인 풍경이 되었다. 이번 전시는 재개발과 재건축 과정의 순간을 스펙터클한 이미지로 보여줌으로써 건축물의 존재에 대한 인식과 장소성을 환기하고자 한다.
전시 제목 ‘Apart’는 거리, 시간, 공간적으로 떨어진다는 의미 외에 ‘산산이 부서지거나 찢기다’라는 의미를 갖고 있다. 하나의 건축물이 해체된다는 것은 물리적인 사라짐뿐만 아니라 오랜 시간 동안 켜켜이 쌓여 있던 삶의 흔적이 사라지는 것이다. 조상민의 사진은 건축물이 해체되는 순간의 찰나를 가장 사진에 충실한 방식으로 포착하는데 이는 아이러니하게도 사라짐에 대한 아쉬움과 파괴의 카타르시스를 동시에 불러일으킨다.
조상민은 자연과 인공의 대립적인 풍경에 관심을 가지고 둘 사이에 보이지 않는 실체에 대해 끊임없이 의문을 던지는 작업을 지속해오고 있다. 《Apart_해체의 순간》은 사라짐에 익숙한 우리의 시선과 의식에 신선한 자극이 되리라 생각한다.

It has been more than 30 years since massive constructions started to build apartment buildings in Seoul and other big cities throughout the country. A repetition of building, demolishing and rebuilding becomes routine scenes in our daily lives. This exhibition invites you to pay an attention on the presence of the buildings and get recognition for their placeness by showing spectacular images of redevelopments and reconstructions.
“Apart” as the exhibition title defines “separating something into the pieces” as well as “being away from each other in terms of space, time and distance.” Demolishing a building structure means not only physically disappearing, but also removing all traces we had left there for a long time. Jo Sang-Min’s photos capture the moments when each structure is being demolished. His works ironically inspire both a sense of frustration of being disappearing and a sense of catharsis of destruction.
Jo has continuous interests in contrasting landscapes the nature and man-made features make, and keeps having questions about an invisible truth about what they are really about. This exhibition provides a refreshing stimulation to those accustomed to disappearance.


□ 작가소개
조상민 작가는 일본 니혼대학교 사진학과와 동대 대학원 영상예술학 석사, 예술학 박사 학위를 받았다. 2005년 갤러리가이아, 2013년 리씨갤러리에서 개인전을 가졌으며 현재 서울예술대학교 디자인학부 사진전공 초빙교수로 재직 중이다.
